Pope Benedict on Love and Eucharist
When it was announced that Pope Benedict XVI was going to produce
an encyclical, everybody was expecting him to write something on
the level of his high theological attainment and knowledge. But,
as that first encyclical was made known to the Church faithful,
Pope Benedict XVI surprised many with something very simple but
wise in its foundation of Christian faith: “God is Love”. After
this publication, he again produced a document on the Eucharist
entitled, “Sacramentum Caritatis” (sacrament of charity). This
document updates what Pope John Paul II has alreadys stated in
his encyclical, “Ecclesia de Eucharistia”.
More Books on Love and Eucharist
For those who are interested in the Christian themes of love and
the Eucharist, there is in this article a list of twelve books
that can help in gaining a broader understanding of these two
Christian mysteries. Written from different contexts and
perspectives, one can search for these books in the library
or Catholic bookstore and read it for spiritual growth, for
a broader understanding of Christian love and the Eucharist,
or for obtaining thematic ideas in posting to one’s Catholic
blog or web site.
The Lectionary Readings
The gospel for the 4th Sunday of Easter is composed of
gospel verses that depict Jesus as the Good Shepherd who
knows His sheep and calls them to listen to His voice. If
we however turn to the first reading, there is more drama
involved in the scripture scene. This scene features Paul
and Barnabas, who, because they were rejected by the Jews,
went to preach to the Gentiles. When the two became
successful, the Jews turned against them. The two however
continued on in the strength and inspiration of the
Holy Spirit.
Limbo, Eschata, Eschatology…
Limbo is a technical theological term that goes way back in
Catholic Church history. It refers to a condition or state of
being where a person is designated to go after death: a place
where he does not experience the fullness of heaven nor does
he experience the pains of hell. This theological term was
used since St. Augustine to resolve the situation where infants
who died without mortal sin should not be condemned to the
pains of hell. The eschata or last things refer to: death,
judgment, heaven, hell and the second coming of Christ. The
study of these is called eschatology. Present day eschatology
emphasizes Christ as the norm for understanding the last
things and the future of Christian hope for all who remain
faithful to God and His will.
