19 January 2008

Yesterday, January 18, was the start of the Week
of Prayer for Christian Unity.  Zenit News is
providing a meditation for each day of this Week.
It is prepared by the Pontifical Council for
Christian Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order
of the World Council of Churches. If you wish to
follow the meditations, you can follow it through
our Main Feed.

Features from Ignatius.com

We have featured two pages on Ignatius.com items
on the subject of pro-life: Building a Culture of
Life: Books, Films, and a CD-ROM
and Prepare for
Nationwide Pro-Life Passion
.  Ever since the years
of Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa, the
Catholic Church has stressed her role in promoting
the value of being pro-life.  Being pro-life however
does not mean downright disrespect for the stand of
others and their causes that go against this stand.
Being pro-life simply means taking the stand of
Jesus, who was a healer and who always breathed
life, the Holy Spirit, as He did so upon those whom
He encountered after His resurrection.  And being
pro-life does not mean only marching out to the
streets with banners and placards and making a
strong statement against those against it. Being
pro-life can simply mean assenting to the value
of pro-life and praying that those who are against
this stand may soon see the value of nourishing,
building, and propagating life.

Book reviews

There are two book reviews published during this
week: Catechism of the Catholic Church and The
Pontiff in Winter
.  For those looking for ideas,
topics and inspiration for posting to their Catholic
web logs and writing Catholic articles for their
site, the Catechism is a very good reference for
anything basic to the Catholic faith.  Having a
personal copy of it is really a must for Catholic
bloggers and writers.  The other book in review is
The Pontiff in Winter.  Author John Cornwell gives
a more detailed story of John Paul II as a person
and as a pope.  Since he is interested very much
in Vatican affairs, he has a lot of tidbits of
information which may not be seen in other books
on John Paul II.  His treatment of the person,
life, and mission of John Paul II is balanced -
presenting him also not only as a very holy and
saintly man, but also a man that has limitations
like any other - especially during those last
years of his life when he was experiencing many
physical sufferings.
