2nd Sunday of Lent, Year A

The second Sunday of Lent teaches us a very
important lesson: to look back at the “peak”
experiences of life whenever we become discouraged,
disheartened, or feel overwhelmed by the troubles,
problems, and burdens that we experience in the
commitments of our state of life.  Preachers who
speak about the Transfiguration of Jesus tell us
that this event in Jesus life, when His face
became as dazzling as the sun and His clothes
as radiant as light, signify a message to the
apostles and give them a glimpse of the glory
of Jesus.  This is important to the apostles
because they will see how their Master will be
scourged, crowned with thorns, whipped and laid
out on a cross until He dies.  The Transfiguration
was meant to let them remember this “peak experience”
so that they will not lose heart when the time
comes for Jesus to be humiliated and disgraced by
His people.  One message therefore of the mystery
of the Transfiguration is for us to realize that
we can hope for better times in our present state
of life, when things don’t work as they should,
because we have “peak experiences” in the past
that not only encourages us, but makes us realize
that there will still be more “peak experiences”.
These peak experiences could be: a graduation
experience, a wedding engagement, an ordination,
a religious profession, a business success, an
award merited, and anything that raises our
spirits and makes us extremely happy. More
Pope Benedict waives the five-year waiting
period for the cause of beatification of Sis.
Lucia

Last February 13, Zenit news featured a news item
which gave information about the waiving of the
five-year waiting period for the cause of the
beatification of Sis. Lucia - one of the visionaries
of Fatima, Portugal.  This is the third time in
our contemporary times that the five-year waiting
period has been waived.  The first time was for
the cause of Mother Teresa, declared by John Paul
II.  The second, which was declared by Pope
Benedict XVI, was for the cause of the beatification
of John Paul II.

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette
Soubirous

Last February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
was celebrated.  The Lourdes visionary, Bernadette
Soubirous, was also honored on this date.  Of the
many apparitions of the Blessed Mother, the two that
are popular for our contemporary times are the
apparition at Fatima and the apparition at Lourdes,
France.  The message of the Blessed Mother at Fatima
was a call to repentance and penance and a warning
of a great distress to come upon the world which
Sis. Lucia disclosed only to an incumbent pope.
On the other hand, the message of Our Lady at Lourdes
is also similar to Fatima and with the added miracle
of the healing spring at Lourdes, France.

Cardinals petition Pope for the declaration of
the fifth Marian dogma

Another Zenit news item also related to the devotion
to the Blessed Mother is the information given about
the cardinals petitioning the holy father to declare
the 5th Marian dogma: Mary as co-redemptrix, mediatrix,
and advocate.  These petition is made because of the
present state of our global society that is becoming
degenerated, filled with natural disasters, and is
on the verge of engaging in a greater conflict among
each other.  The fifth Marian dogma will acknowledge
Mary not only as the Mother of the Church but also of
all humanity.
